As you may notice, our coaches are super fans of open water events. Maybe because we are living in Stockholm, which is surrounded by water and we get addicted to all types of open water activities. Only last month our coaches participated in 2 events around Stockholm: Riddarfjärdssimningen and Stockholm Triathlon.
So today we prepared a so called “wish list” of open water races around the world which can be interested to water addicted travelers. Let’ start our adventure…
USA: Alcatraz Escape
Every swimmer dreams of making the ultimate “ESCAPE” from the historical island prison located in the middle of the San Francisco Bay! This is the swim the Anglin Brothers and Frank Lee Morris successfully attempted in their escape from Alcatraz on the night of June 12, 1962. The event is limited to 800 participants and sells out months in advance every year so don’t wait too long to register.
PLEASE NOTE: This swim is NOT for NOVICES. This event is for experienced open-water swimmers only. You should be able to swim one mile comfortably in a pool in under 40 minutes.
You can read all the details and register for 2019 HERE.
USA: Manhattan Island Swim
The future of the race, long organized by NYC Swim, was recently in question. With NYC Swim no longer running the 28.5 mile circumnavigation around Manhattan, a vacuum was created in the marathon swimming world. With the blessing of NYC Swim founder Morty Berger, NYOW took on the responsibility of running and sanctioning of the newly named 20 Bridges in 2016. This was an incredibly large undertaking, as the swim is part of the triple crown of marathon swimming, and holds a storied 100 year history. In its inaugural season, NYOW successfully brought 22 swimmers around the island on three separate days. In appreciation for the revival of the swim around Manhattan, NYOW was awarded the 2016 Streeter Award for Service by the Marathon Swimmers Federation, and David Barra was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Currently, the number of foreign swimmers is limited to 1,000, and only up to 300 are permitted to participate from each country. There are 12 age categories for each gender, from the age of 14 to 70 and over.

Italy: Messina Strait Crossing
Ready to dive into water heralded in legends for centuries? You’ll swim across the Messina Strait from Punta Faro in Sicily, to Cannittello, Calabria in Italy with strong currents in your favor. With water at 73-77 degrees Fahrenheit, you can shed that wetsuit and soak up the blue Mediterranean – and the delicious food and wine in the region.

Switzerland: Lake Geneva
The Classic 12, re-establishing what was once called the ‘World Cup’ route – is a beautiful 13 km swim (an approximate ‘baker’s dozen’) across the lake between Lausanne and Évian-les-Bains. It crosses the international border between Switzerland and France and is a great test for those wanting to get a real taste of open water marathon swimming.
A lead boat, support boat and kayaks shepherd waves of swimmers of a similar pace across the lake to ensure maximum safety.
It was celebrated on 26 August in 2018, so just keep checking their page to know 2019 date.
UK: London’s Dock 2 Dock
It offers a 1500m, 5k and 10k swim, all taking place on London’s Royal Docks. For those doing the 5k and 10k, a provided tow float is required. Taking place on July 28, 2018, the Dock 2 Dock allows swimmers to see the Royal Victoria Dock and Royal Albert Dock. With its beautiful architecture and rich history, London is the perfect place for a vacation. They have already date for 2019: Saturday 13th July 2019 – 10k, 5k & 1500m events
